Aleksandra Bankowicz, born in 1975 in Warsaw, Poland.

I graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology at the University of Warsaw and the Department of Intellectual Property at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Throughout my life, aside of my home country, I lived in Algeria, NYC, Bangkok, Shanghai and currently Doha, Qatar.
My work focuses on documenting the lives of women in ethnic minorities across Asia. I travel to remote villages to photograph and interview women, exploring their roles in their communities and creating a distinctive narrative centered on the female perspective.
Since the age of 18, I have been involved in film and TV production, directing documentaries such as Life is Not a Play, which has been presented at domestic and international festivals, and Le Retour, featuring a French photographer work in China. Alongside my production career, I've continued to develop my photography, receiving recognition for my series Awaiting, which won an honorary prize in the Newsweek “Free and Independent Woman” photo competition.
My series have been published in Newsweek Magazine, where Awaiting was recognized in the Free and Independent Woman photography competition, as well as in Polish magazine Rita Baum, Brazilian Revista Mensch, and Finnish Docu Magazine. A photograph from the Bangkok Pride Parade was published in Smithsonian Magazine as part of the Pride Month celebrations in 2024. Since 2019, I have regularly exhibited my work, with solo and group exhibitions held at the Museum of Asia and the Pacific in Warsaw (2019), Lady Saigon in Shanghai (2021), Foley Gallery in New York (2021), PIN31 in Bangkok (2022), Glasgow Gallery of Photography, Alchemy Experiment in Glasgow, and in Milan at Fondazione Luciana Matalon as part of the Atlas of Humanity worldwide project (2024). Most recently, I participated in a group exhibition showcasing the works of twelve female photographers from Poland at Defabryka Gallery in Warsaw, where I presented selected images from the Women I Talk To series in March 2025.
